  • GUIDED SHAMANIC JOURNEY

May 10 Circle
Following the theme you have chosen—rebirth—we will structure the experience into three journeys, using
tools and practices linked to the Norse tradition. The entities whose intervention will be invoked
have been chosen for the cosmogonic role they play in Norse mythology.
Within the circle, we will work on the theme of personal rebirth: it is important that participants
have a very clear understanding of the purpose and choose a specific, well-defined area
to focus on.
At the beginning, we will briefly introduce the concepts necessary to understand the work and outline
some fundamental rules, which must be respected to ensure a safe space from a
ritual perspective and proper sharing.
Participants are invited to bring percussion instruments or rattles and to use them during
the singing sessions, provided they follow the rhythm set by the lead drum.

Materials needed

  • [optional] blanket, yoga mat, or something else to lie on
  • [optional] a blanket to cover yourself with; recommended if you feel the cold; each trip lasts about 10–15
minutes, during which you remain lying down and still
  • [optional] eye mask; not strictly necessary, but if you are very sensitive to light,
    may help
  • [optional] pillow
  • [optional] percussion instruments or rattles, if you’d like to join in on the songs
  • [optional] offerings: offerings will be shared with the sacred fire and the spirits; since this is optional (
), we recommend bringing something to nourish the spirits and thank them (
) for their presence—whether it be fruit, nuts, libations (water, wine, beer), bread, (
) meat, etc.—whatever you can bring will be burned in the fire, and the rest will be offered at the site.

Schedule Opening of the Circle

  • Song and offering to the Landvættir.
The Landvættir are the entities that inhabit and guard the land: spirits of the earth, the
mountains, and the waters, who coexist in the same space as human settlements. Sources
suggest that the relationship with these spirits was fundamental in daily life,
especially in agricultural and rural contexts.
In this case, we will ask permission to use their land as the “settlement” for
    our ritual.
You may choose to participate in the invocation chant by playing music, dancing, or
    simply by listening actively.
  • Lighting the sacred fire.
During this phase, we will light the fire that will accompany us throughout the ritual. It will be
kept burning until the end of the experience.
  • Purification of the sacred space and the participants.
The sacred space and the participants will be sprinkled with purifying water, and incense will be burned

purifying herbs in the sacred fire.

  • Invocation of Thor to protect the circle and prevent the intrusion of energies and spirits that
do not belong to the experience.
Thor is one of the best-known deities of Norse mythology, associated with thunder, strength, and
protection. In the Edda and archaeological sources, he emerges above all as the defender
of human and cosmic order, the one who maintains boundaries and repels chaotic forces.
In the ritual context, Thor is invoked as the guardian of the sacred space, a function
consistent with his mythological role as protector of Miðgarðr.
You may choose to participate in the invocation chant by playing music, dancing, or
    simply by listening actively.
  • Invocation of Loki as the primary agent of change and catalyst for the energies of
    rebirth.
Loki is a complex and ambiguous figure, often described as a “trickster.” He does not represent evil
in a moral sense, but rather embodies a principle of disruption and transformation.
In mythological sources, it is often he who destabilizes the order, inducing an imbalance
through which the creation of something new becomes possible (often, in particular,
the tools and weapons of the Gods).
He will therefore be invoked as an agent of transformation and rebirth, in line with a Norse worldview
in which destruction and creation are deeply interconnected.
During this invocation, we will begin the first journey, and you will be asked to
lie down comfortably and remain attentive, allowing the drum to carry you into
    an altered state of consciousness.

Practical Section
First Journey
During the invocation of Loki, the first journey will begin, in which participants will come into
contact with the Spirit or Spirits granted by Loki, who will be tasked with guiding each person
through their own process and path of rebirth. The Spirits can manifest in many ways and forms,
such as animals, plants, or humanoid beings, with characteristics that are more or less realistic, fantastical, or
monstrous. Stay open to every form of manifestation (even the most horrific is significant).
Optional sharing
A time for discussion for those who wish to share their experience, ask for clarification on
what they have seen, and receive guidance on how to interpret it.
Second journey
It will focus on the area of one’s life for which renewal is sought or where one wishes
to be guided toward a rebirth. It is essential that participants have a clear idea of the area they
wish to work on and do not approach the experience in a general way. Asking for a general rebirth
does not help achieve a result: more specific and limited requests are better, so that
the guidance received is also targeted.
Optional break and sharing
Time to integrate the experience and, if desired, share it. Again, those who
feel comfortable doing so may ask the group for explanations or help to better understand the experience.

  • A short break to recharge—
    : The Third Journey

Thanks and farewell to the spirits who participated in the process and previous journeys.
Optional sharing
As with the previous ones, if you wish to share and receive clarification before the
conclusion of the experience.
Conclusion

  • Farewell and thanks from the participating organizations
  • Bringing things full circle and wrapping up the day
  • Final debriefing

Clarifications
The shamanic journey is not a meditative experience.
It is a technique that involves entering a different, altered state of consciousness in order to have
a direct experience of non-ordinary reality.
Harner, the father of Transcultural Shamanism, categorizes this non-ordinary reality into three
worlds: the Upper, Middle, and Lower Worlds. However, in Norse mythology, there are nine worlds:

  • Ásgarðr – home of the Æsir
  • Vanaheimr – home of the Vanir
  • Miðgarðr – the world of men
  • Jǫtunheimr – Land of the Giants (jǫtnar)
  • Álfheimr – home of the elves (álfar)
  • Svartálfaheimr / Nidavellir – the world of dwarves/artisans
  • Niflheimr – a primordial world of ice and fog
  • Múspellsheimr – the primordial world of fire
  • Helheimr – the realm of the dead ruled by Hel
Given the nature of the goal (rebirth, in relation to a specific aspect of one’s life, and thus linked
to the human experience), we will travel to Miðgarðr.
